Please read carefully the information below.
Over the past 12 months we have seen many students come to the IT Office with laptops requiring repair. As some of these students have devices without Apple Care+, repairs have sometimes exceeded $750. We have seen some students twice in the same month for the same repairs requiring another $750 to repair the laptop again. These repairs could have been drastically reduced ($149 versus $750) if Apple Care+ had been purchased within 30 days of the laptop purchase.
Accidents do happen. When they do, it is imperative that the device is repaired quickly and returned to the student to minimise disruption to learning.
For this reason, we strongly recommend the purchase of AppleCare + for Mac (https://www.apple.com/au/support/products/mac/).
AppleCare+ for Mac provides expert technical support and additional hardware coverage from Apple, including unlimited incidents of accidental damage protection. Each incident is subject to a service fee of A$149 for screen damage or external enclosure damage, or A$429 for other accidental damage. In addition, you’ll get 24/7 priority access to Apple experts by chat or phone through getsupport.apple.com. Coverage begins on your AppleCare+ purchase date. The cost of repair for a device with AppleCare + is significantly reduced compared to repairs on devices that are not covered. These prices may change occasionally as they are controlled by external suppliers.
The Apple Authorised Service Provider EduCom IT, located in Smeaton Grange, regularly collects and drops off devices to St Benedict's, which includes BYODD Macs. This will include AppleCare+ covered items and outside of warranty items. Full details can then be forwarded to the parents or carers in which during this repair time College supplied loan equipment can be made available. If there are any quotation approvals needed or invoicing matters, families will need to liaise with the EduCom IT directly. Repairs typically take 5-7 working days from receipt or once a quotation has been paid.
Families can also choose to have their device repaired by a 3rd party agent; however, the College recommends that all servicing be carried out by an Apple Store or Authorised Service Provider to ensure repairs are conducted by certified technicians and are using genuine Apple parts.
Different resellers, including JB Hi-Fi and Officeworks, may offer their own coverage plans when purchasing new tech devices, including Apple products.
Many of these plans are marketed as offering special benefits or services to consumers, and we have had families tells us they were sold the plan by sales representatives claiming it was, or was better than, AppleCare+.
It is important to note that these plans have no affiliation with Apple, and AppleCare+ can only be purchased via your Mac or an Apple Store. The plans resellers offer are typically supplied by a 3rd party company with separate terms, conditions and fees, and may not provide the same levels of technical support or hardware coverage as AppleCare+.
While the College strongly recommends families purchase AppleCare+ for Mac cover, we recognise that you may see some benefits in these other coverage plans. We encourage all families to carefully read through and understand the terms and conditions of any coverage offerings, and if you purchase the device in store to ask a sales representatives to go through the difference between the two offering in detail before making a decision.
